Gorgeous mockup! I agree, we need to replace the grey with orange. The animated vertical line is a nice touch. I can see it happening.

In recent KDE taskbar entries for minimized apps are dimmed and I would prefer that instead of dimming non running apps.
Running apps could have one short line of the left (like the YouTube icon), I think those left short lines are to indicate number of windows app have opened (?) so one for each running would be nice.
